Join our team on Saturday, May 6th for the next Riverkeeper Sweep. This is our third year participating and we look forward to another rewarding day helping to clean the shoreline.
When: Saturday, May 6th, 10am-1pm (meet at 9:45AM)
Where: Stuyvesant Cove Park (off FDR near 23rd st) – meet at Solar 1 Building off of FDR
(for GPS use Skyport address 2430 Fdr Drive Service Rd E, New York, NY 10010. South of BP Gas Station)
What: Activities will include planting, watering, weeding, mulching, and pruning. We’ll be helping the park prepare an area for compost bins, which will include light raking and shoveling. We’ll also assist with rubbish collection and removal. Each activity will be supervised by a member of the park staff who will work alongside us and be available to answer any questions and provide direction and assistance when needed.

What to Bring: We require that volunteers wear close-toed shoes and clothes they don't mind getting dirty, and recommend sunscreen, water bottles, hats and anything else that will make working outside most comfortable. There will be a water cooler in the office to refill water bottles as well as restroom facilities and a secure place to leave personal belongings.
Why:This is a great opportunity to literally get your hands dirty with other (re)insurance industry professionals. Sweep volunteers will get ample exercise and fresh air, all while supporting a great cause. This year’s Sweep volunteers will learn about plant identification, what plants are native vs. non-native, and how invasive species effect the local eco-system.
More background about The Sweep site: Stuyvesant Cove Park is an all native species plant park. It provides reclaimed habitat to many plants of our eco-region including those that are endangered and rare. The park is both a passive recreational area as well as an educational space. It is the park’s goal to promote knowledge of native plants and their importance in the ecosystem we are all a part of, as well as instill appreciation of NYC’s unique local flora and facilitate the experience of connecting with nature in this urban environment. The park is overseen and maintained by Solar One, a non-profit dedicated to furthering the learning and innovation that results in more sustainable and resilient urban environments. The park is just under two acres and is maintained by only two Solar One Staff, so we rely a great deal on our volunteers. Solar One partners with members of the community and local businesses and organizations to help keep the park a beautiful and enjoyable space for all.
